What is Ketamine Integrated Therapy (KIT)?
Ketamine Integrated Therapy is the alchemy created when the medicinal aspects of ketamine are combined with the meaning-making experience of psychotherapy.
Ketamine works to support mental health because it balances specific neurotransmitters, generates stronger neural connections, and changes how the brain regulates mood. It has been proven to be an effective treatment for a variety of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD and chronic pain. The benefits of ketamine are magnified when combined with an intentional type of psychotherapy (KIT) that focuses specifically on making meaning from what happens during and after a ketamine medicine session.
What does a KIT session look like?
Before your first medicine session, you will meet with your counselor to complete and discuss a comprehensive intake form. This lays the foundation for the counselor to have a greater understanding of your past, present and hopes for the future. You will also discuss any previous experience with psychedelics as well as any spiritual beliefs and practices. The counselor will also explain that it may take multiple medicine sessions for some meaning to emerge - so patience is required on this journey.
A KIT session has many things in common with typical therapy sessions. They are 50 minutes in length, and can be held in-person or via telehealth. Scheduling is more strategic, because a KIT session ideally should take place a day or so after a medicine session. This is because we want to engage with the emotions, physical sensations, metaphors, visions, symbols, etc. that emerged during the ketamine session (or in the hours and days after receiving the medicine). These experiences are where we may discover clues to rich insight and healing.
The KIT counselors at Ignite have received specific and intentional training to help make meaningful connections from your experience. They might incorporate more esoteric components such as music, art, or movement that may help to enrich or describe a client’s journey. They will also provide support as you process any challenging experiences or adverse effects that were encountered. KIT sessions with your counselor will continue throughout your ketamine journey, and potentially beyond, as the significance of your experience deepens with time.
