A powerful, evidenced based treatment of PTSD is Prolonged Exposure. The Veteran Affairs (VA)’s National Center for PTSD defines Prolonged Exposure Therapy as: “Prolonged Exposure (PE) teaches you to gradually approach trauma-related memories, feelings, and situations that you have been avoiding since your trauma. By confronting these challenges, you can decrease your PTSD symptoms”. The VA has endorsed Prolonged Exposure therapy as the gold-standard treatment for PTSD for both veterans and civilians alike.
In addition, there is growing excitement among therapists and their clients for a treatment modality called Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing for the simple reason that it works so well. In comparison to traditional talk therapy, EMDR quickly gets to the root cause of problems to achieve results that last. EMDR functions at the biological level, helping the brain to reprocess experiences and learned behaviors that are tethered to deep-seated, fearful emotions.
EMDR is now widely accepted as the gold standard treatment for trauma and PTSD, but we have also found in our practice that EMDR is useful in treating addiction, anxiety, OCD and phobias. As a trauma and addictions specialist, EMDR and Prolonged Exposure Therapy have become our favorite tools because it is evidenced-based and solutions-focused.
