Five a day to keep the blues away

By Mary Dziennik, Certified Hypnotherapist with Ignite Counseling Colorado

Whew, what a year it’s been, and continues to be.  Maybe you’ve noticed some new behaviors in the stress of the times.  Or perhaps some unwanted habits are exacerbated or getting out of control.  In times of uncertainty,  struggle and fear, the body/mind can get out of balance and look for comfort and relief in any way it can:  overeating, drinking, drugs, binge watching tv, running on coffee, or avoiding responsibilities.

If you feel like your thoughts, habits and behaviors are getting out of control, here are five steps you can take today that can bring you back into balance, create calm, increase energy and improve your mood and outlook.

 1.     Eat more fruits and vegetables.  5 servings a day (half cup) are full of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber.  Fill up on nutrition and you’ll be less likely to reach for junk food.

2.     Walk for 30 minutes a day.  Strengthen your cardiovascular system, reduce stress, build muscle and flexibility, promote calm and a good night’s sleep.

3.     Speaking of a good night’s sleep, try to get 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night.  Practice good sleep hygiene:  Try to go to bed and get up at the same time every night. Keep your bedroom cool and dark. Do some simple stretches or yoga.  Turn off electronics.  Essential oils such as lavender can be soothing and relaxing.

4.     Practice Gratitude.  List 10 things you’re grateful. Big or small, common or unique.  Focus on what you have, not what you don’t have.  Your brain will respond with peace and satisfaction.

5.     Practice Visualization.  The mind doesn’t know the difference between what is real or what is imagined. When you visualize a beautiful beach or dream vacation, your body responds as if you’re already there. Muscles relax and your nervous system can start releasing tension and worry.  When you imagine and visualize desired goals or outcomes, you’re focusing energy and attention and allowing your subconscious mind to work for you rather than against you.  Focus on what you want, rather than what you don’t want and begin to attract the right people, circumstances and opportunities.

If all that sounds like a challenge, we can help!  Hypnotherapy is a safe and effective tool for change.  Hypnosis is a proven method to assist people in accessing their subconscious mind, and creating positive change in thoughts, beliefs, habits and behaviors.  It’s comfortable, relaxing and can provide insights and information you may not be aware of consciously.

Neuroscientists report that 95% of the time we are operating out of our subconscious mind, and only 5% out of our conscious minds. That means a lot of repetition day after day after day.  Same thoughts, same feelings, same actions.  Hypnotherapy can help you utilize the power and creativity of your subconscious mind to create a new life: new job, new home, new relationship, improved health or a new sense of purpose and meaning in your life.  Through intention, practice, desire and hope, a new you can start showing up.

Get excited about the possibilities and be inspired!  Every day is a new beginning.
